HINTS from the Newsletter: -When working with large bias pieces, spray with sizing before sewing. Sizing will stabilize the stretchy edges and won't flake and build up on the iron sole plate like starch. -The more relaxed you are when quilting, the better and more consistent your stitches will be. Try humming to give yourself a rhythm and to remind you to breathe! -Two brown rubber doorstops placed under the back of your machine will tilt it forward enough to ease the strain on your neck. Adjust the tilt by how far you push the doorstops under the machine.

The Quilter's Homecoming by Jennifer Chiaverini

THE QUILTER'S HOMECOMINB BY JENNIFER CHIAVERINI. This is the latest book by Chiaverini about the Sugar Camp Quilt Group. It came out May 29 and as all of her books, is a delight to read. She is a must on my reading list.

recent recipe for confetti slaw

I made Rita's recipe for confetti slaw and took to a church dinner - what a hit. If you haven't tried it, do so. Even it passed the test of my husband and that's a test. Tks to Rita

Quilt Market

As we all know, Quilt Market is coming up (May 3-6)! If you plan to go, be sure to stop and say 'Hi' to Rita. She always comes back to the shop loaded to the gills with as many new fabrics, tools, toys and trinkets as she can! (She usually spaces the deliveries over some time sew her accountant/hubby doesn't have a heart attack). DOES ANYONE HAVE ANYTHING SPECIAL THEY WOULD LIKE TO SEE HER BRING BACK? Let us know! And be sure to stop in and see what Rita finds at Market!

Photo quilt

We would like to know of a good pattern to make a photo quilt for a graduation present. We would only like to use a couple of different fabrics. Could you recommend the best photo paper to use. We would like an easy pattern. Could you recommend the pattern or book it is in and also the photo paper to use that is best. Please inform us as soon as possible. We need to get it made by the first part of June. Thank you.

A couple of the Creations Mystery Quilts would fit that description. Most only take three fabrics or sew, and they are all easy! Hopscotch and Squaredance are two patterns that would work nicely. As far as transferring the photos to fabric, you can have them put onto transfer paper (Creations uses a company near the shop to do this) and then heat pressed onto 200 count muslin (Creations does at another local shop). OR, if you have a good printer at home, you can get Printed Treasures Fabric Paper and print your pictures directly from your computer.

I purchased Rita's Book at the Paducah "event". Was so happy to see her published. Can't wait to get down to Chilli. to, perhaps--get it signed. Sheila and I had a great time there, missed Rita's demo/booth, we were there a day later. This was my first really big convention--next to Columbus. Plan on many more now. GO---Rita!! Have picked out the quilt I will try. (Where is Becky, now that I need her?!!!! )Thankfully, no flying geese in the one I picked out! I'M STILL A BEGINNER!!!

T-Shirt Quilt

I am intersted in creating a quilt of t-shirts. I have a friend who has ran about 9 marathons with a shirt from each race. I thought it would be a good way to save them and the memories. I have never done this. If anyone can suggest a pattern, how-to book or a class I could take, I would appreciate hearing from you. Thanks so much!

Tips from Vicki

Here are a few tips that will help to take the headaches (and backaches) out of quilting. * Use a piece of doubled fabric about 1 1/2" x 4" as a leader to sew onto first at the start of each machine sewn seam to prevent bobbin jam-ups and save thread. * Purchase the largest rotary cutting mat you can afford and have room for. * The best height for a surface where you stand to work is 3 inches below the height of your bent elbow. * Use a cloth eyeglass case to store your rotary cutter. You can throw it in your sewing basket without danger. * Keep an idea notebook for inspiration and source material. Greeting cards that can be adapted to quilts should go in the notepook. * Allow about 17" extra at the top of a bed quilt to cover the pillows. * Stick your quilting needles into a bar of still-wrapped soap. It will keep them sharp.

One for the Money Janet Evanovich's series of Stephanie are laugh out loud, thigh slapping fun! Hard to put down! I recommended them to my son, and he later told me they were "kinda chick lit" but admitted he was on the 8th book!

For My Daughters All of Delinsky's recent books are wonderful. Her earlier writings were not exciting. Start with For My Daughters and then Saving Grace. Enjoy. For My Daughters is told in an unusual way. First there is the early days of Mom's life, then it moves through each daughter. and the last section ties it all together. Invest in Kleenex!! for the last section!

Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln I listened to the abridged version of this book by Doris Kearns Goodwin and loved it so much I'm going to read the complete work. Goodwin has the gift of being able to make history come alive without being tedious. I learned so much about the politics and the behind the scenes goings on during Lincoln's campaign and Presidency. For a change of pace check out this gifted writer.

The Quilter's Apprentice by Jennifer Chiaverini. I have read almost every book in Jennifer's bunch that she has written and I have to say I have enjoyed everyone of them. You don't have to worry about bad language.....as in a few of the books I have found....and had to stop reading them, because they were an insult to my mind... but hers are so much fun to read and have good plots and wonderful character development. Also, I always learn something historical about quilting from Jennifer's books. Another good read is by Emilie Richards and I think the name of it is The Double Wedding Ring...or something like that. She is an English teacher and a quilter and her stories are longer than Jennifer's, but they are also safe in the language dept. and her characters have a lot of depth to them.

All the Elm Creek Quilt novels by Jennifer Chiaverini You do not have to be a quilter to enjoy these books. Just start with the first one 'The Quilter's Apprentice' and follow this lovely group. I love Fannie Flagg's writing too!

Quiltaways

Hi all, Just wanted to say how much fun I had at the September quiltaway. Met a lot of friendly people and learned SEW much from everyone! Oh, and the food was fantastic, too. I would encourage everyone to attend a quiltaway if possible, even if you attend alone, as I did. The girls are so friendly that you feel right at home in no time at all. Thanks, Creations, for providing a fun getaway! See you in April!
